What are "reeds" in machine woven rugs?

Updated: Mar 22, 2023

You may have noticed that in the description of our machine woven rugs, in addition to size and material, we always mention another characteristic known as "reeds" whose number varies from 320 to 1500. But what do we mean by reeds and how does that affect the rugs when it comes to price and quality? In this blog we will briefly explain it.

Reeds & Density

Each rug has two categories of features which determine its quality and intricacy, in addition to the material. These categories are known as "Reeds" and "Density." A quick and easy way to assess a rug's quality, is to look for higher numbers in both reeds and density. The higher the reeds count, the more intricate the design, the more durable and sturdy the rug will feel underfoot, and the longer it will last.

Reed count or simply reeds refers to the number of knots per one meter width of the rug. For instance, a 700 reed rug would have 700 knots in each one meter of width. More knots mean higher quality, because they increase the rug's density, making it more durable, and also allow for more intricate designs with more colours. It's like resolution in TVs and monitors; the higher the reeds, the higher the resolution and details. Rugs with 1000, 1200 and 1500 reeds could be considered as High definition TV (HDTV).

If you're looking for a rug with sophisticated and intricate designs that will last for decades, we recommend a high reed count rug of 1,000 or more. Density (aka Picks) is another factor that indicates the number of knots per one meter of lengthwise of the rug, and it has the same implications as the reeds count. However, generally, density is nearly identical for rugs with the same reeds count, so it is sufficient to only focus on the reed count when shopping for a rug's quality.
